Cleft chestnut
Fencing
All my fencing is made from sweet chestnut cleft by hand using axes, wedges and froes. Sweet chestnut is naturally durable because of its high tanin content and will outlast any treated softwood alternative.
I offer fencing in three styles:
Cleft picket
Sussex post and rail
Woven lath panel

The pickets can be cut to heights between three and four foot. The tops can be flat, wavy or staggered according to your preference.
Cleft Sussex post and rail is the traditional vernaclur fence of the South East of England. The visibility afforded by the gaps between the rails unobtrusively marks a boundary and often enhances a view.
The posts have paired mortises in which the rails sit with their cleft side facing upwards to shed water.
2 or 3 rail are the most common arrangements, but 1 or 4 rail can also be done.

Cleft Sussex Post and Rail comes in two grades:
Agricultural grade fencing has the bark still on and has not been chamfered to remove any rough edges.
Estate grade has been peeled and chamfered by hand using a drawknife rather than a mechanical peeler to give a smooth, tactile finish, while still maintaining the duarable cleft surface of the material.

Woven lath panel fencing provides a beautiful alternative to 'off the shelf' fencing panels. The laths are split individually by hand using a froe. They sit in frames made from round, peeled chestnut constructed using drawpegged mortise and tenon joinery. The beauty of the weave is that it allows light through while also maintaining privacy.
